Gynecomastia Causes

If the growth of man boobs is due to the body laying down too much fat then losing weight would certainly help, as would a course of regular exercise using the free weights in a nearby gym, or using the machines that focus on developing the pectoral muscles.

Naturally, if the development of gynecomastia is due to the growth of the underlying breast buds then the first thing to do is make an appointment with the physician who regularly cares for your everyday health. One thing that really would need to be eliminated is the possibility of breast cancer.

Gynecomastia in men

Breast Cancer

This is something that men rarely consider, but men can suffer from breast cancer in just the same way as women can since men have the vestigial structures of breast tissue present as well and, unlike women, men have never been encouraged to check their breast area for unwanted changes. There are other underlying diseases that can result in gynecomastia occurring in men.

Hormone Imbalance

Basically, these are the underlying causes that trigger off a problem with the hormone balance in the body. As a direct result of the hormone balance being disrupted, gynecomastia develops. However, in those diseases or clinical conditions that can be treated successfully, once these have healed and the balance of hormones has once again been re-calibrated, the gynecomastia will disappear, leaving no more than a memory of moobs behind.

When there are no other underlying causes, moobs occur as a direct result of the estrogen/androgen hormone balance becoming disrupted so that too much estrogen is circulating through the man's system.

In a way, this explanation is over-simplified because it is possible for breast tissue to become over-sensitive to the correct amounts of estrogen circulating through the man's body: either way, there is an imbalance.

Environmental Pollutants

Various pollutants in the environment can have dramatic effects on the circulating hormones in the human body. This effect has been clinically studied, using pubescent boys.

Results were collected from 1679 teenage males, indicating that when blood serum levels of lead were elevated the risk of gynecomastia increased. However, when blood serum levels of hexachlorobenzene were increased, the incidence of moobs was reduced.

Activity of Aromatase

In men, estrogen is produced from testosterone and androstenedione being converted in the skin, muscle and fat deposits by the action of an enzyme called aromatase. This turns estradiol into estrone which is the male version of the female estrogen.

When there is too much estrogen the suffusion of blood is enhanced. Furthermore, epithelial tissue grows with greater abandon, both elongating and branching within each breast to match the increase of fibroblasts present.

Basically, in a man, estrogen stimulates breast tissue to grow and androgen inhibits the growth of breast tissue. Under normal circumstances, testosterone is produced at the rate of 100 times to 1 of estrogen in the male body, whilst the circulating testosterone is 300 times more than the amount of circulating estrogen.

When circulating estrogen levels in men were elevated tissue became more vascular and, according to Ramadan et al, the greater the vascular the tissue, the higher the incidence of gynecomastia.
